Jacob , later given the name Israel , is regarded as a Patriarch of the Israelites . According to the Book of Genesis , Jacob ( / ˈ dʒ eɪ k ə b / ; Hebrew : יַעֲקֹב Standard Yaʿakov  ) was the third Hebrew progenitor with whom God made a covenant .
